WEEE & Battery Recycling
Waste Management (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) (WEEE) Regulation SI 340 of 2005.
The WEEE Directive was introduced on 13th August 2005; the principles of this directive:
- to improve the environmental performance of all operators
- to prevent waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE)
- to promote the reuse, recycling and recovery of EEE ( Electronic and Electrical Equipment)
Waste Management (battery & accumulators) Regulations 2008, S.I. 268 of 2008
The implementation of European Directive 2006/66/EC on batteries and accumulators means that importers and manufacturers (known as Producers) of batteries and/or products with batteries incorporated have an obligation to organise the collection and recycling of waste batteries in Ireland.
WEEE and waste batteries must not be disposed of in the normal municipal or recycle bin. The crossed out wheelie bin symbol on the batteries reminds us not to put these items in the bin but segregate them for recycling.

Misco will take back WEEE free of charge on a one for one, like for like basis i.e. you purchase a DVD player from Misco you can return your old DVD player to any of the Misco allocated recycling points below. Batteries can be returned to this address as long as they are of equivalent type to those sold by Misco.

Also distributors (retailers) of batteries are legally required to take back waste batteries subject to the following;
- Waste batteries can be taken back to any store that sells similar batteries with no purchase necessary.
- The distributor is not obliged to take back leaking or damaged batteries or more than 5Kg of batteries at any one time.
- Also watch out for WEEE Ireland’s blue battery boxes in designated shops around Ireland.
Protecting the Environment
Batteries and WEEE may contain chemicals and metals that could cause harm to human health and the environment if not managed properly. Proper recycling of these items can recover materials for use again in industry, help conserve space in our crowded landfills and protect our environment from contamination. Therefore, make sure you dispose of all waste batteries and WEEE responsibly.
Cost of Recycling
vEMC (Visible environmental management costs) have been introduced under the WEEE Directive and these are used by the compliance schemes; to recycle and recover all the items under the WEEE in an environmentally sound manner. These are also known as Producer recycling fund contributions or PRF’s
The costs were agreed by the WEEE Register Society Limited in consultation with the electronics and electrical industry and they cover items such as, fridges, washing machines, televisions etc.. All the contributions are assigned to recycling activity and not diverted anywhere else.
Products that are sold on this website that have a vEMC will show three prices,
- The full retail price inclusive of PRF and VAT
- The Producer Recycling Fund Contribution
- The Retail price inclusive of VAT
