Recycling (Waste Electrical or Electronic Equipment and batteries)

The Waste Electrical or Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive requires countries to maximise separate collection and environmentally friendly processing of these items. In Ireland, distributors (including retailers) must provide a system which allows all customers buying new electrical equipment the opportunity to recycle their old items free of charge.

Misco IE supports the recycling of waste electrical items and portable batteries as it is better for the environment by ensuring lead and other toxins in electrical goods do not contaminate the soil and water. Contamination by such toxins can have very harmful effects on the environment.

To remind you that old electrical equipment and batteries can be recycled, it is now marked with a crossed‐out wheeled bin symbol.

Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) is taken back free of charge on a one-for-one, like-for-like basis. Waste batteries including rechargeable batteries are taken back free of charge. You are not obliged to make any purchase when returning old batteries. Each local authority must also accept household WEEE and small batteries free of charge at its recycling facilities. All WEEE and waste batteries must be recycled and should not be placed in any of your household wheelie bins. Make sure you always recycle all your old electrical goods and batteries.

Not for domestic bins

To facilitate the return of WEEE and batteries Misco IE is a member of WEEE Ireland which manages the collection, recovery and recycling of WEEE and waste batteries on our behalf.

Misco IE does not accept Automotive or Industrial batteries.

Visible Environmental Management Costs (vEMCs)

The vEMC is a regulatory contribution towards the cost of recycling for each item purchased. The current eVMC contributions defined by the National Producer Registration Body are as follows:

  • Category 1.1 (€10) - American Side by Side/American Style Refrigerators;
  • Category 1.2, 1.2a and 1.3 (€5) - All large domestic appliances;
  • Category 4.1 (€5) - large TVs (32” or larger);
  • Category 5.1 (€0.15 ) - fluorescent lamps; and
  • Category 5.2 (€0.05) - LED light sources.
